Discover the stunning landscapes of Valcheta and its Petrified Forest with this fantastic trip from Las Grutas. This beautiful area of the Argentinean Patagonia will amaze you!
Valcheta and Petrified Wood Trip
We will leave at 9 am from the center of Las Grutas and head along the National Route 23: the picturesque road that connects the coast of Río Negro with San Carlos de Bariloche.
During this journey through Argentinean Patagonia, we will learn about the history of the local railways and the nearby limestone mines. The highway will take us to the town of Valcheta, where we will stop to visit its handicraft market. There we will see how the matras are used, a very popular cloth used by the gauchos to make rugs and boots.
We will continue the trip with a 45-minute hike through the famous Valcheta Petrified Forest. The fossilized palms and araucarias date back to the Cretaceous period, 90 million years ago!
After observing these fossils, we will return to Valcheta to visit the María Inés Kopp Regional Museum. Inside, we will find curious objects, such as the only television set on which the whole town saw Argentina proclaimed champions of the 1978 World Cup.
To put the perfect final touch to our adventure, we will go to the pretty Valcheta stream to enjoy a nice outdoor lunch that includes several appetizers, a starter, several salads, a main course, and a selection of French desserts.
After lunch, we will return to the original starting point in Las Grutas, where we will arrive at 5 pm.
