Discover the Taino culture of Puerto Rico on this trip from Ponce to the indigenous ceremonial centres of Tibes and Caguana. You'll be captivated by their incredible history.
Tibes and Caguana Archaeological Sites
At 9 am we'll pick you up from your hotel in Ponce in a 4x4 and head to the Tibes Indigenous Ceremonial Center.
During the guided tour we'll get the chance to see the courts where the indigenous Taino population played the popular ball game "batú". These sports courts are lined up in the same direction as the sun on equinoxes and solstices. We'll find out why as we admire the remains of the oldest astronomical observatory in the Antilles, which is also located at this site.
After the 90-minute tour of the Tibes archaeological site, we'll head to Utuado, a picturesque Puerto Rican town where you'll be able to get some lunch. Then we'll set off for another of the most important archaeological sites in Puerto Rico: the Caguana Ceremonial Ball Courts Site, where we'll try to decipher its fascinating rock carvings. Did the Tainos who made these inscriptions want to leave a message for future generations?
At the end of the one-hour guided tour of the Caguana site, we'll make our way back to your hotel, arriving by around 3:30 pm.
