Bread Making Workshop: what to expect?
At 10 am we'll meet at number 4 via dell'Artigianato and head to the traditional bakery where your bread making workshop will take place.
In the bakery, which has been run by four generations of family and is still going strong, you'll be immersed in the art of breadmaking, learning all about the key ingredients, including the best local semolina and yeast, and the important techniques used to make the dough and bake the bread.
Enjoy a practical demonstration during which you'll get your hands dirty, learning how to mix the ingredients, knead and shape the dough and finally bake it to make your own 100% handmade Italian bread. What's more, at the end of the experience, you'll get to take your bread home!
For the finishing touch on your workshop, you'll be treated to a tasting of typical Italian breads. Sample bread with oil, traditional tarallini and focaccia, washed down with a glass of wine. The activity will end at 12 pm.
What is Matera bread?
Matera bread is a large, almost muffin-shaped loaf, with a high risen point in the middle, and many have said that it resembles the rocky landscapes of the Murgia Materana Park located next to the city. The bread is also known for its yellow-brown crumb and crust.
Bread has always been an important product in Matera. Until 1950, the town's wood ovens were communal, and the locals took turns to make their bread in them. How do you think they could tell their baked goods apart? You'll learn all about it on your Matera bread making workshop!
