Palau de la Música Catalana is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Barcelona and the only concert hall in the world to hold UNESCO World Heritage status. The History of Palau de la Música Catalana

Domènech i Montaner built the Palau between 1905 and 1908 as a commission from the Orfeó Català, a choral society founded in 1891 that had become a focal point of the Catalan cultural revival. The brief was ambitious: a concert hall that would express Catalan identity through architecture as much as through the music performed inside it. The result was a building dense with symbolism, mosaic, stained glass, and sculptural reliefs, all organized around a central auditorium crowned by a massive skylight of stained glass that floods the space with natural light. It was controversial at the time, celebrated in the decades that followed, and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997 alongside the Hospital de Sant Pau, another Domènech i Montaner masterwork a few kilometers away.
